Depending on your state’s requirements, you will need a combination of liability coverage and uninsured motorist, collision and comprehensive, personal injury protection, and medical payments insurance. Check with our team to see which car insurance coverage you need.
Liability Car Insurance
Liability insurance is there to help pay for the injuries or damages you cause to someone else’s property when you cause a car accident. It also helps pay your legal fees if you get sued because of an accident.
Your state will have a minimum liability car insurance coverage amount that you need to purchase. These amounts are not usually enough to cover the expenses of a major accident. Purchase enough liability insurance to cover your assets if you would lose a lawsuit after a car accident.
An umbrella insurance policy can give you extra liability coverage. You can purchase $1 million or more in liability coverage to protect your assets if the liability coverage through your auto insurance pays for a value lower than the worth of your assets.
Uninsured Motorist Insurance
Uninsured and underinsured motorist insurance will pay your medical bills if the person who causes an accident does not have liability insurance or does not have enough to pay for your health care expenses.
This coverage may not be required in your state, but it is a good investment. It covers the medical expenses for you and your passengers, any lost wages if you can’t work because of injuries you sustained due to the accident, funeral expenses, pain and suffering, and car damage.
Purchase the same amount of uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage as you have of liability car insurance.
Collision Insurance
Collision insurance pays for damages to your vehicle if you get into an accident or collide with a tree, pole, or other structure.
You want enough collision coverage to pay for repairs to your vehicle.
Comprehensive Car Insurance
Comprehensive coverage helps pay for damages to your vehicle caused by things other than collisions and wear and tear. This can cover things like broken windshields and damage from hitting an animal or things falling on your car, or damage from storms and other natural disasters, as well as damage from fire, vandalism, and theft of the whole vehicle or its parts.
Depending on the value of your vehicle, get as much coverage as you think will help pay for repairs.
Personal Injury Protection
In addition to uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, personal injury protection can ensure that you have help paying for medical bills for yourself and passengers, no matter who caused the accident. It also pays for lost wages, funeral expenses, and replacement services for things you can no longer do because of injuries sustained as a result of the accident.
The amount of personal injury protection you purchase may depend on your state’s requirements through no fault laws. If you have a good health insurance plan and this insurance is optional, you can decline it.
Medical Payments
Medical payments coverage pays for medical bills and other expenses for you and your passengers, no matter who caused the accident. This is required in some states.
