Medicare
The overall goal of the Medicare program is to provide all eligible plan members with the opportunity to have access to affordable healthcare and prescription drug coverage. If you’re nearing the age of Medicare eligibility, which is age 65, it’s important to know how you can enroll and be enrolled in the plan that provides you with the coverage you need.
Making The Transition To Medicare
For many eligible Medicare beneficiaries who receive Social Security benefits, they will be automatically enrolled into the program. For those who are not automatically enrolled, they will need to take advantage of their Initial Enrollment Period which begins three months before their 65th birthday and ends three months after their 65th birthday.
You will typically enroll in Original Medicare (Parts A and B) first before you can add on a Medigap or Part D plan, or join a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan. If you delay your enrollment past your Initial Enrollment Period, you will have to pay late enrollment penalties. While the Part A late enrollment penalty can be paid off, the penalties for Part B and Part D are permanent, so enrolling as soon as you become eligible is the best option.
How Can I Find A Medicare Plan That Works For Me?
Once you are enrolled in Original Medicare, you will have the options of adding on a Part D plan, Medigap plan, or joining a Medicare Advantage plan. Deciding which plans are best for you will all come down to the type of coverage you are needing.
For example, if you need prescription drug coverage, consider adding on a Part D plan. If you want some or most of your out-of-pocket costs covered, then one of the ten Medigap plans may work for you. If you still want to keep your Original Medicare coverage but are interested in possibly having additional benefits like dental, vision, or hearing coverage, then we can help you find a Medicare Advantage plan that works for you.
