Dental, Vision, and Hearing
Dental, vision, and hearing services can be expensive. It’s typically best to purchase insurance that can cover some of these costs so they won’t fall solely on you. Having insurance is one of the best ways to cover the costs associated with these services, but if you are nearing Medicare eligibility, it’s important to know how Medicare will provide coverage.

Original Medicare Coverage
Original Medicare, which consists of Parts A and B, does not include dental, vision, and hearing coverage. While beneficiaries can still choose to find standalone plans that provide this coverage, they will need to cover the entirety of the out-of-pocket costs until they do find coverage.
There are a few rare circumstances in which these areas of coverage may be included within Original Medicare. These circumstances are often decided upon on a case-by-case basis and will only be covered if the service needed is deemed to be medically necessary.
For example, you can expect dental coverage from Original Medicare if the service needed will protect your overall health. Original Medicare will also cover:
- Corrective lenses, one pair of glasses, and one set of contacts after cataract surgery (this is only offered once per lifetime)
- Glaucoma screenings (if you are high risk for it)
- Diagnostic eye tests and treatments
- Artificial eye, ocular prosthesis, or glass eye
- Diagnostic hearing and balance exams
Medicare Advantage Coverage
Medicare Advantage is an alternative to Original Medicare that may offer this coverage and other benefits that Original Medicare doesn’t include.
With Medicare Advantage, you may be able to receive coverage for:
- Fillings
- Dentures
- Teeth cleanings
- Tooth extractions
- Routine checkups
- And more
