Medicare Part A

Medicare Part A is hospital insurance that provides coverage for:

  • Home health care
  • Hospice care
  • Nursing home care that’s not long-term care
  • Skilled nursing facility care
  • Inpatient care

Part A is also one of two parts of Original Medicare and doesn’t typically cost anything in terms of a premium payment. If you worked for at least ten years (40 quarters) and paid Medicare taxes, you will not have to pay a monthly premium for Part A.

Medicare Part B

Medicare Part B is medical insurance that provides coverage for:

  • Ambulance services
  • Mental health care
  • Durable medical equipment
  • Preventive and medically necessary services
  • A limited amount of prescription drugs
  • Outpatient care

Part B is also the second part of Original Medicare but will require you to pay a monthly premium.

Once you are enrolled in both Part A and B, you can add on a Medigap plan that will provide coverage for your out-of-pocket costs, or you can join a Medicare Advantage plan instead.

Medicare Part C

Medicare Part C is commonly known as Medicare Advantage and provides the same coverage that you would receive with Original Medicare. Depending on the type of Medicare Advantage plan you join, you may also receive additional coverage benefits, which can include:

  • Dental, vision, or hearing coverage
  • Memberships to a gym
  • Nutrition and wellness programs
  • Prescription drug coverage
  • Transportation to doctor appointments
  • Adult daycare services

Medicare Part D

Medicare Part D will provide coverage for your prescriptions. You can have Part D as a standalone plan while you’re enrolled in Original Medicare. You can also have prescription drug coverage as an added benefit through a Medicare Advantage plan.

Part D plans will have a specific list of the drugs they cover, which is known as a formulary. Every Part D plan is required to cover at least two prescription drugs from each category, but also must cover most (if not all) of the drugs in these specific categories:

  • Immunosuppressants
  • Antidepressants
  • Antipsychotics
  • Anticonvulsants
  • Anticancer
  • HIV/AIDS drugs
