Medicare Advantage
After being enrolled in Original Medicare, which consists of both Parts A and B, you will have the option of joining a Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage) plan. Medicare Advantage plans will provide you with the same coverage as Original Medicare, but they can also provide plan members with additional coverage benefits. These benefits can include:
- Dental, vision, or hearing coverage
- Memberships to a gym
- Nutrition and wellness programs
- Prescription drug coverage
- Transportation to doctor appointments
- Adult daycare services
Depending on what type of Medicare Advantage plan you join will determine what additional benefits you receive.

Types of Medicare Advantage Plans
Before joining a Medicare Advantage plan, you need to be aware of the different types of Medicare Advantage plans that could be available to you.
Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) Plans
PPO plans allow their plan members to pay less out-of-pocket if they use their in-network providers, but still give them the opportunity to go out-of-network to receive their healthcare at the cost of paying more.
Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) Plans
HMO plans typically require their plan members to use their in-network providers and choose a primary care doctor so they can receive referrals to see specialists when needed. You can receive care outside of the plan’s network only in emergency situations.
Medicare Medical Savings Account (MSA) Plans
MSA plans combine a savings account and high-deductible health plan. Medicare will deposit money into the savings account and you can use what is deposited to pay towards your deductible. Once the deductible is met, you will receive 100% coverage from your plan.
Private Fee-For-Service (PFFS) Plans
PFFS plans will let you go to any doctor to receive your healthcare as long as they accept your plan’s payment terms. The plan will decide how much you pay and how much they will pay for the services you receive.
Special Needs Plans (SNPs)
SNPs are limited to provide coverage to certain groups of people, such as those who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid, have a chronic condition, or live in an institution like a nursing home. The three types of SNPs are D-SNP, C-SNP, and I-SNP.
