Advantage For Veterans

Combination Of Coverage
Before you can join a Medicare Advantage plan, you must first be enrolled in Original Medicare (Parts A and B). If you have VA coverage, this is typically something that the VA will suggest you do when you become eligible for Medicare.
Here’s how combining Medicare Advantage with VA coverage will be beneficial:
- Medicare Advantage will cover everything you need in a single plan (it combines Part A, Part B, and Part D coverage)
- If you have VA coverage, you may experience wait times with VA facilities or are required to travel a long distance for your care (with VA, you will only receive coverage by going to VA facilities)
- Your VA coverage is also not guaranteed and can change
- Medicare Advantage will expand your coverage outside of VA facilities, allowing you to use your Medicare Advantage plan’s in-network providers (if they have one) to receive your care
- Medicare Advantage also has an out-of-pocket maximum on what you spend on your healthcare
- Depending on the Medicare Advantage plan, you may also receive additional benefits (dental, vision, hearing coverage, etc.)
When Can I Enroll In Medicare Advantage?
There are certain enrollment periods as to when you will be able to enroll in Medicare Advantage plan. These periods include:
- Initial Enrollment Period – The Medicare Initial Enrollment Period is for American seniors turning 65. Three months before the month of your 65th birthday, you can first enroll in Medicare. You have seven months during this enrollment period to sign up for Medicare benefits.
- Annual Enrollment Period – From October 15 to December 7 of each year spans the Annual Enrollment Period. During this time, people who are enrolled in Medicare Advantage or a Medicare Part D plan can drop their plans and return to Original Medicare, renew their plan contracts, or switch to a different plan.
- Special Enrollment Period – Special Enrollment Periods don’t have a specific time of year of when they occur as they are only available for people who meet certain conditions, such as losing their current coverage and needing new coverage.
