HMO Plans
A popular Medicare Advantage plan is a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plan. These plans require their members to use their in-network doctors, hospitals, and specialists. You will only be able to receive coverage when going outside of their network if it’s an emergency.

Benefits Of HMO Plans
HMO plans will provide you with the same coverage as what you would receive from Original Medicare (Parts A and B), which includes inpatient and outpatient coverage. They may also provide you with additional benefits:
- Dental, vision, or hearing coverage
- Memberships to a gym
- Nutrition and wellness programs
- Prescription drug coverage
- Transportation to doctor appointments
- Adult daycare services
The area you live in and the plan providers available will determine which of these benefits you will be eligible for.
While these plans are not as flexible as PPO plans, HMOs actually have lower monthly premiums because of their restrictions. With HMOs, you are also required to choose a primary care provider and get referrals to see specialists.
When Can I Enroll In HMO?
There are certain enrollment periods as to when you will be able to enroll, which include:
- Initial Enrollment Period – This period starts three months before the month of your 65th birthday and will end three months after your 65th birthday.
- Annual Enrollment Period – From October 15 to December 7 of each year spans the Annual Enrollment Period. During this time, people who are enrolled in Medicare Advantage or a Medicare Part D plan can drop their plans and return to Original Medicare, renew their plan contracts, or switch to a different plan.
- Special Enrollment Period – Special Enrollment Periods don’t have a specific time of year of when they occur as they are only available for people who meet certain conditions, such as losing their current coverage and needing new coverage.
- Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period – If you’re already enrolled in Medicare Advantage, you can use this period to switch to another Medicare Advantage plan.
