Original Medicare
Original Medicare consists of two parts: Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B. Part A will provide coverage for your inpatient hospital costs while Part B will focus on outpatient medical care.
Other coverage you can expect from Original Medicare includes:
- Home health care
- Hospice care
- Nursing home care that’s not long-term care
- Skilled nursing facility care
- Ambulance services
- Mental health care
- Durable medical equipment
- Preventive and medically necessary services
- A limited amount of prescription drugs
Medicare Supplements
Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans can be added on once you are enrolled in Original Medicare and are 65. They are designed to supplement your Original Medicare coverage by taking care of the out-of-pocket costs Original Medicare does not cover. These costs can include:
- Deductibles
- Coinsurance and hospital costs
- Hospice care care coinsurance and copayment
- Excess charges
- Skilled nursing care coinsurance
- First three pints of blood in a transfusion
- Foreign travel emergency care
Medicare Advantage
Medicare Advantage provides you with the same coverage as Original Medicare, but they can also provide plan members with additional coverage benefits. These benefits can include:
- Dental, vision, or hearing coverage
- Memberships to a gym
- Nutrition and wellness programs
- Prescription drug coverage
- Transportation to doctor appointments
- Adult daycare services
Medicare Part D
Medicare Part D is Medicare’s prescription drug plan. Every Part D plan is required to cover at least two prescription drugs from each category, but also must cover most (if not all) of the drugs in these specific categories:
- Immunosuppressants
- Antidepressants
- Antipsychotics
- Anticonvulsants
- Anticancer
- HIV/AIDS drugs
Part D plans will not cover
- Weight loss/weight gain drugs
- OTC drugs
- Fertility medications
- Erectile dysfunction medications
- Cosmetic drugs
