2022 Costs for Original Medicare

What are the 2022 Costs for Original Medicare?

Medicare prices are, in most cases, rising in 2022. Here’s what to expect:

Medicare Part A Premiums

While many Medicare beneficiaries do not have to pay a monthly premium for Medicare Part A, those that do will experience an increase in rates.

You may qualify for premium-free Part A if:

  • You have received disability benefits from Social Security or the Railroad Retirement Board for at least 24 months;
  • You had Medicare-covered government employment;
  • You already receive Social Security benefits before you turn 65;
  • You are eligible for retirement benefits from Social Security or the Railroad Retirement Board when you turn 65 but haven’t filed for them yet;
  • You or your spouse have worked and paid taxes to Social Security for at least 40 calendar quarters; or
  • You have End Stage Renal Disease and meet certain requirements.

Those who have between 30 and 39 calendar quarters (work credits) of working while paying taxes to Social Security will pay a monthly premium of $274 in 2022 for Medicare Part A. People who paid Medicare taxes for less than 30 quarters will pay $499 each month for Medicare Part A in 2022.

Medicare Part A Deductible

You pay the Medicare Part A deductible for each benefit period. A benefit period is the stretch of time starting when you are admitted as an inpatient and ending when you have not received inpatient care for 60 days.

The 2022 Medicare Part A deductible will be $1,556 for each benefit period..

Medicare Part A Coinsurance

For inpatient care under Medicare Part A, you will have to pay a daily coinsurance amount for extended stays in the hospital, as a mental health inpatient, or as an inpatient in a skilled nursing facility.

The coinsurance rates are the same for inpatient stays in a hospital or mental health facility. You pay nothing in coinsurance for the first 60 days of your stay for each benefit period. For each day from 61 through 90, you will pay $389 in 2022 for each benefit period. For day 91 and beyond of each benefit period, you will pay $778 in 2022 until you have used up your 60 lifetime reserve days. After you have used your lifetime reserve days, you will pay all costs for any days 91 and beyond for each benefit period.

For inpatient stays in a skilled nursing facility, you pay nothing in coinsurance for the first 20 days. From day 21 through 100, you pay a daily coinsurance of $194.50 for each benefit period. You pay all costs beyond day 100 per benefit period.

Medicare Part B Premiums

Everyone pays premiums for Medicare Part B. The standard Part B premium amount is $170.10 in 2022. If your income is higher than the standard bracket, you can expect to pay more with an Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (Part B IRMAA).

Medicare Part B Deductible

The Medicare Part B deductible is an amount you pay each year. The 2022 Part B deductible is $233.

Medicare Part B Copayments

You can expect your copayments for Medicare Part B covered services to be 20% of the Medicare-approved cost.
